The holiday markets are filling up, your inbox is overflowing with sales, and somehow you still don’t know what to buy for your hardest-to-shop-for person. Sound familiar? Holiday shopping doesn’t have to become a race to buy more. A little planning can help you find meaningful gifts, stay within your budget, and leave yourself time to enjoy the season.
Here are nine holiday shopping tips to make your gift list feel more manageable.
1. Start With Ideas, Not Purchases
Getting an early start doesn’t mean buying the first thing you see. Give yourself time to think about what each person would genuinely enjoy. Have they mentioned something they need? Started a new hobby? Sent you a link with a very subtle “just saying”? Keep those clues in a note on your phone, so you'll have a starting point when you’re ready to shop.
2. Make a Gift List You Can Actually Use
Write down everyone you plan to buy for, including family, friends, clients, or anyone you’d like to thank. Next to each name, add:
A few interests or gift ideas.
Your spending limit.
When you’ll exchange or send the gift.
Whether it’s purchased, wrapped, or shipped.
A simple list helps you avoid forgetting someone or buying three gifts for one person because you forgot what you already purchased.
3. Set Your Budget Before the Sales Set It for You
Budgeting is my number one priority. It’s much easier to make thoughtful decisions when you know what you’re comfortable spending. Set an overall holiday gift budget, then decide how to divide it. Leave room in the budget for wrapping and shipping costs. And remember: you don’t have to spend the same amount on everyone to show equal care. A gift that reflects someone’s interests can feel more personal than an expensive purchase chosen in a hurry.
4. Shop Online Without Shopping on Autopilot
One of my favorite things about online shopping? Skipping the traffic and crowded parking lots. But convenience shouldn’t replace a little research. Before purchasing from an unfamiliar seller, read recent reviews, check the product details, and review delivery and return policies. On a marketplace, pay attention to who is actually selling the item. The platform’s name and the individual seller’s reputation aren’t the same thing.

5. Make Room for Small Businesses
As a small business owner, I’ll always encourage you to explore independent shops, local makers, and holiday markets. They can be wonderful places to find distinctive gifts, discover a new artist, or speak directly with someone who knows the product well. Ask about materials, customization, and turnaround times. That simple conversation with a small business owner may help you find something much more personal for your loved ones.
6. Let Your Gift List Guide the Deals
A discount can help your budget stretch further but only if the purchase makes sense in the first place. Before checking out, ask yourself: Would I still consider this a good gift if there weren’t a sale sign beside it? Compare the same item across sellers and look at the final checkout price. A larger percentage off doesn’t always mean a lower total.
Sanity Check: Don't try to predict the single best shopping day. Focus on finding a suitable gift at a price you’re comfortable paying.
7. Suggest a Secret Santa or Group Gift
If buying for every adult in the family has become more stressful than enjoyable, suggest drawing names. Agree on a spending limit and exchange date, and invite everyone to share a few interests or ideas. Buying for one person gives you more time to focus on a thoughtful choice. Another option is a group gift. Several people can contribute toward something the recipient would genuinely appreciate, without any one person taking on the full cost.
8. Work Backward From the Gift-Exchange Date
Start with the day you need the gift in hand, then allow time for processing, delivery, and wrapping. For handmade, personalized, or custom gifts, check how long production takes before shipping even begins. If you’re sending the gift yourself, you would want to account for that as well. Check the seller’s current holiday ordering guidance, and if the timing is unclear, ask before purchasing.
9. Look Beyond Brand New Gifts
Antique shops, vintage stores, and secondhand bookstores can be excellent places to find gifts with personality. Think a beautiful serving dish for someone who loves hosting, an out-of-print book by their favorite author, or a vintage accessory that suits their style. Choose with the same care you would give a new purchase. Inspect the condition, check that all necessary pieces are included, and consider whether the recipient would enjoy a secondhand gift. The objective is finding something that feels like them, and not simply finding something inexpensive.
Keep the Thoughtfulness. Delegate the Shopping.
You don’t have to visit every market, open every sale email, or find the most impressive gift in the room. The goal is to choose something that makes the person receiving it feel considered.
